Some more stuff from 2008 SXSW Interactive....

I am working on a full report from my trip to sxswi and I hope to have it up tonight...but for now I think everyone should take a listen to the opening remarks by Henry Jenkins (MIT).

film 2008 SXSW Podcasts - Opening Remarks with Henry Jenkins and Steven Johnson

It is fascinating to hear him talk about the TV shows Lost and The Wire so take a listen.....oh and the stuff with me in it comes later!

p.s. Not sure why the graphic says SXSW 2007 when this is from this past week...I know cause I heard it!

..at least Donald Trump can say he still has his integrity.

I have slagged Donald Trump in this here blog a bunch of times. I think I do it because I don' t like the way (IMHO) he has morphed into a caricature of the guy I admired as an impressionable youth.

That being said I am nothing if not fair and I believe it is worth noting when someone shows integrity....so I figured I should mention something that happened on the last Celebrity Apprentice and why it impressed me.

So before I begin I should say that I am not sure why I am watching CA because like Celebrity Jeopardy, it doesn't seem as hard or as interesting and I won't even get involved in the speculation as to if half of these folks are even Celebrities but that is not what this post is about.

Ok so in the last episode things happen that find Gene Simmons (Project Manager of the all woman team) in the board room and when The Donald asks Gene "The Tounge" Simmons who he is bringing back he chose two people who had no direct result in the teams loss.

This put Trump in a weird position...."Do I fire the guy who is the only reason to watch the show and will probably kill my waining ratings...or do I fire one of these other two who had nothing to do with the team but by firing them I will keep Gene Gene the Dancing Machine on the Show"

This was a legitimate "tough choice" but I was glad to see Trump exercised integrity and fired the correct person....Gene Simmons......even if it does kill his show.

Oh well, Good for Trump. I am not sure if I will continue with the show...oh who am I kidding....I am still in as long as Jennie Finch is there.

Pimping Aint Easy....but they know a little something about Marketing

I admire Pimps.....or well I guess I admire the lifestyle. I am not for hitting girls or forced confinement or really anything that pimping stands for but I do like the fact that they can proudly wear "Gators" and drink from Blinged out cups......oh ya and I think they invented the "first taste free" style of marketing.

First Taste Free in a nutshell is the same as try "before you buy" but since we are talking about drugs and Pimping I will respect their terminology and use First Taste Free.

Not sure why but I started thinking about other places to apply this besides street corners but I did and I came up what I think is a good one.

It may have been because I was in the Hospital over the holidays or just the fact I am a little obsessive about the concept of "marketing to people who can't go anywhere" (Prisoners, Shut Ins and the like) but started to wonder why a Television manufacturer (like Sony, LG, Phillips, Sharp etc etc) doesn't offer, as a donation, to replace all those ridiculous 12" televisions in a patients room with flat screens in exchange for a big sign saying "These TV's were donated by Sony"or whoever. The Goal is to expose people to these TV's, with a First Taste Free, and hope that they will run out and buy one after they leave the Hospital since they probably got used to the set and since prices are dropping on them.....and lets not forget that even if sales from Hospital attendees doesn't soar the TV MFG will get a tonne of great PR and can probably count on that exposure helping move some sets and creating good will with the Hospital going community.

And since we are on the topic there is no reason why there shouldn't/couldn't also be PS2's or 3's with these sets to make the stay a faster one. If you're admitted to the Hospital it is rarely for less then two or more days and once you are there you are looking for anything to do to pass the time. If I was the guy/gal in the hospital bed with all these cool distractions I would definitely be appreciative if not brand loyal for a long time afterwards.....even if the guy who hooks up the TV isn't wearing "Green and Gold...The Green is for the Money and the Gold is for the Honey"

-saul

p.s. I fully understand this would be an expensive proposition but the risk would probably pay for itself quickly and the amount of people you would touch in the 10-15 years your product would be showcased would be unimaginable.......also it would be a great place to send all your refurbished sets!

If you love freedom...you should read this interview

I mentioned in my last (mostly incoherent) post about the fact that I have little memory of my time in High School....while that is 100% true I do remember a few things and one those "things" is my school girl crush on Chris Elliot.

Just so we are clear...I didn't have a crush on the man but rather his work.

His appearances on early episodes of Letterman were wacky and delicious at the same time (like this one)

I am glad to see he is getting some recognition again with a couple of best selling books and I really enjoyed this recent interview with him

Read it with me....wont you?

....and if you are too tired to read (people tell reading this blog is sometimes a workout) then just enjoy another easy to digest video

Are we owed proper continuity in entertainment?

Full Disclosure : I may be the only person who cares about this but I think it is still worth bringing up!

I have a weird memory.....weird is the best way to describe it because I have a wealth of useless information stored in it (like that Bombo Rivera was the starting outfielder of the '78 Expos) as well as a fountain of important info......that gives me my distinction of being the Smartest Man in the World but at the same time I can't remember much of what my High School life was like.

The obvious joke would be to say I don't remember High School because of some drug related experience but the actual fact is that I was a straight laced kid and just can't remember much of that time because I have compartmentalized all those memories into a small area so I could make more room for all this new knowledge I am soaking up.

That being said I wonder if writers of TV and Movies need to pay as much attention to their writing as I do as a viewer. Watching TV for me is an exhausting experience sine I am storing every line or event so I can use it in some joke or obscure reference at another time...this is why I sometimes get frustrated watching shows that ignore major plot points from past shows as if to say "Viewers....don't sweat the small stuff and just watch". The subject of Continuity is a huge deal/debate in the comic book world but I actually give comics a break on this since there are 40+ years of stuff to worry about in some titles but TV (for me at least) is different.

The reason I am writing about this is because of the last episode of Las Vegas.

Yes I know the show isn't really worth getting worked up over but I have seen every episode and actually like it.....and now that Tom Selleck is on the show I expect to see some "magnum magic". Anyway to keep it brief I will sum this up like this.....in the show a character gets fired and is told to leave the casino and her personal belongings from her suite (where she lives) will be delivered to her. Later in the episode she has all her goodies and is living with another character because she is tight for money and is in need of a job.....sounds all kosher so far (Happy Channukah everyone) except last season it was revealed that she was independently wealthy and had a HUGEAMONGOUS (that is not a spelling error) safe in her suite loaded with the largest collection of silver bars in the history of private ownership.

Am I being unreasonable to ask people to keep their stories straight?

Am I getting frustrated with all the reality TV I have been watching?

Am I using this topic as a way to stall until I come up with something better to blog about?

Will Andrew Dice Clay sell his 900 page memoir to a publisher?

Anyway I know this probably doesn't make much sense since I am tired and need some serious sleep.....so that is where I am going right now.

Night Night (real posts coming once I get some rest...and I have some real stuff to talk about....I promise)

Hollywood Writers Strike - YouTube Roundup!

I have been following the WGA writers strike pretty closely since...well....I love TV and movies and want to know when I can expect the see the dramatic conclusion the the two part episode of Las Vegas (featuring "The Selleck").

Is Sam gone?
When will Delinda's baby come?
Will Mike Cannon ever get the girl?

All these answers and more on the next episode of Soap (see what I did there?)

Anyway here are a few really interesting videos explaining the reason for the strike, the mood of the picketers and why I think I will never see another episode of 24 (ie: this strike is going to be a long one)

First we hear from some of the cast/writers of the Office....

Now the Simpsons.....

Opening joke aside (cause it was kinda lame) this is an incredible speech from Seth MacFarlane on the strike and why it is important to help the little guys

Enjoy

Forget Must See TV. Now it is Must Green TV!

Two things I don't post a whole lot about about are:

- TV Show Plots
and
-The Environment

The reasons are simple. Even though I watch more then TV then most folks I rarely watch them on the broadcast day (thanks to Tivo/PVR) so I would just feel silly talking about shows that are a few weeks old..........and I choose not to talk too much about the environment (even though I have in the past) because....well....everyone else is and I don't think I have anything interesting to add to the conversation.

That is until today....and I am combining/complaining about both!

This week NBC launched a GREEN IS UNIVERSAL campaign where for a whole week NBC shows worked a "green" message into every one of their prime time shows and interstitials.

This may have seemed like a great idea in a board room but in execution it left me feeling as if I was being pandered to. Shows like 30 Rock, My Name is Earl, ER, The Office, Life, Chuck, Bionic Woman all have smart writing staffs and I watch and enjoy every one of these shows (yes...even Bionic Woman...and geez I watch a lot of NBC shows) but the Green Messaging in these episodes seemed forced (by the studio and the dialog) because......and I am making a HUGE assumption here.....I imagine this green decision came after the shows where plotted out or even written.

I feel this way since in Bionic Woman (and I am going by memory here) the good guys looked for the bad guys at an environmental fund raiser but instead of just saying in passing that "this is a environmental fund raiser" they instead worked in a full soliloquy about how this fund raiser was helping save this and that they are happy to be looking for the bad guy here. ER was almost as bad because they had a character complain that his carbon footprint increased due to a prank they pulled on him. 30 Rock was funny because they pretty much admitted they were doing this because they had to.

Anyway my point here is this "Don't mess with my TV" or better stated....this seemed crass and commercial. Two things that saving the environment are not supposed to be about. These episodes will seem strange out of context and if you are going to do a promotional tie in like this you don't want it to harm your product in the process.

NBC dropped the ball here and could've achieved the same results they set for their Green is Universal week by not playing with their shows and just had the stars/characters do the PSA's and interstitial in between the episodes. This could have saved them from getting characters to comment on how they are giving up Styrofoam cups only to have them go back to their old ways in future episodes.

Oh Ya....and don't mess with my TV

saul

24 Season 7 is not happening till 2009?

Being the Smartest Man in the World I don't get confused easily but due to conflicting reports from reputable sources I can't figure out if Season 7 of the TV show 24 has been canceled outright or is just on hold due to the writers strike.

Media in Canada has an article today saying it has been axed and to add some editorial spice they go one to add that advertisers in Canada are not concerned since it wasn't drawing viewers like it used to.

But Screen Rant is saying it is postponed but is absolutely coming back after the strike since there are 8 episodes shot already.

So what is it?

Variety says both!?!...well sorta

I will keep digging into this but until I get an answer, please enjoy the season 7 trailer.....it looked like a goody!

Depending on who you listen to.

I want my Late Night TV

If any of you read my google reader share list you will see that I share a bunch of Entertainment industry news and have shared a number of interesting articles about the WGA writers strike.

I am not going to weigh in on my opinion of the strike since....well....I have no inside info or even a different spin then you are getting from folks more connected then me.

One thing I did read this morning that I did find newsworthy and shareworthy was the report that Jon Stewart is paying his writers for two weeks out of his own pocket. Just so we are clear...he is not paying them to write his show but rather paying them to strike and do what they need to do while they are out of work.

This is a classy move and one that owners and managers of other companies can learn from. Paying your staff to strike against you is obviously not a smart idea but this is a different sort of situation so treating your staff with respect and consideration while they work out things will certainly make the return to work much easier and with less hard feelings.

More stuff later

a reason why Hulu wont be a youtube killer

The "internets" are whizzing around with news of HULU and how it has a legitimate chance at being a real threat to YouTube.

I may be alone in this opinion but I think it it is going to have an impact but not the one everyone is expecting....and here is why.

Besides the obvious reason that people like YouTube and are used to going there for fun videos like "How Krispy Kremes Work"

or documentaries on Tom Selleck that some guy held a camcorder to his TV to record

But because YouTube is open to all people and doesn't discriminate.

You are probably asking yourself what I am talking about.

Well are you?

Ok so I found online a blog called Hurty Elbow that had links to a whole slew of Hulu videos....and being the curious investigator that I am I decided to check it out only to find out that much like NBC.com I was prevented from viewing anything because I was not using a USA based ISP.

Limiting this service to just America and not North America is short sighted and will eventually prove to be a classic example of "leaving money on the table". I admit I have not really researched into how HULU is going to work but I have read how the combination of YouTube and iTunes grew viewership for shows like The Office and 30 Rock. If one of the goals is to increase viewership then why limit the number of eyes that can view your content? On iTunes the shows where an item that people paid for and I am assuming it will be the same on HULU so again I say Why limit your audience?

I know this may come across as whiny but I take my TV viewing very seriously!

David Caruso wouldn't be a good marketer.....

I have a lot of guilty pleasures.

One of them is CSI Miami. I am not sure why I still watch the show since it doesn’t captivate me in the way a really good show should but there are a few things that keep me coming back for more.

One is that I love that we are to believe that at a crime scene all a CSI needs to do is spray an aerosol can of stuff into a car and they will magically get the height, weight, age, skin tone and annual salary of the person who was driving......and the other is David Caruso and his magic sunglasses.

I was thinking about David Caruso’s magic sunglasses last night and how they relate to Marketing. I admit this is a bit of a stretch but bear with me till the end.

Good/Great marketing or advertising happens when people take the time to really understand their target market. This involves going beyond just the statistics but to do some real world talking to folks and getting real opinions. I have written about companies in the past who employ celebrities to endorse their products even thought the celebrity is a bad fit...well this wouldn’t happen if people just took the time to talk to people. Personal connections and networking is such an important tool in career development so why wouldn't you use the same concepts to gather information. Asking people in casual conversations what they like and what they don't like is IMHO a far more honest and valuable tool to get real world information to what people want....since....well....you are asking real people.

Some marketers rush to judgement, make quick decisions, and walk away. This is not different from when David Caruso’s character (and yes I realize it is a TV character) Horatio Cane delivers one of his snappy one liners, puts on his magic sunglasses and walks away....heck an even further comparison can be made to the fact that Horatio never really looks at people but rather squints and looks over your or past you.

For really great marketing to happen people need to step back, look people in the eye and get to know who they are and how these people want to be spoken to and marketed to.......because if you made bad assumptions you will not only create marketing that doesn’t work but you may also find yourself in a car with a guy who is pointing a gun at you because you thought he was someone he wasn’t.....just like on the last episode of CSI Miami!

Still not sure what I am talking about?

Well then watch this.......

If I was in charge of marketing for the CBS show "Cold Case" I would........

Get people to buy music!

Marketing plan over.

Thanks for coming..............er......you look confused.

OK I should explain. Cold Case is a detective show featuring a bunch of foxy police solving "unsolved cases" from years past. It is a good show and one thing that they do so well, maybe better then any other show, is work music in each episode and the songs featured in each episode is specifically from whatever time period that the "case" took place.

Music is another character in this show since it sets the time and mood of the episode. CBS understands the important role it plays since it has a whole section of the Cold Case website listing the songs featured in each episode.

So this got me thinking........(and here is where I tell you what I would do if I worked for them etc etc).....instead of just listing the music used on the show........why are they not offering the songs for sale?

I know there would be licensing and royalty issues but CBS doesn't have to do this on their own. Why not talk with iTunes and set up a section of the site as "Music from Cold Case" and when they choose the songs from the Cold Case spot (and not from the artist's location on iTunes) the album art would show up with the cols case logo and the words "Sunday at 9pm" or whatever.

Staying "top of mind" with multiple "touches" (and I mean good touches) is so important and marketers need to use every available tool to accomplish this.

If you ask me......it is a good thing I am hear to dispense these free ideas :)

A solution to the Time Shifting killing advertising problem....

I have been seeing more and more articles about Timeshifting TV Shows and how it is hurting the effectiveness of the traditional 30 second TV Commercial. I am probably in the minority but I like to watch commercials. Sure they are not all great but some are and I want to see those. I don't watch them to be "sold to" but rather to enjoy the creative energy that went into them....So anyway since I watch a lot of TV I tend to want to see shows that are on at the same time.

Yes I am "the" person Time Shifting was invented for.

I load up my PVR with all the shows I want to watch and if there are conflicting shows I just record them from other places at different times. This sometimes plays tricks on my mind when I don't recognize any of the local TV News people doing their interstitial's and such.

(anyone notice I am still not getting to my point? OK here goes)

The main argument against advertising and time shifting is that you are recording shows from another area therefor not seeing local ads.

This could easily be corrected (OK I have no idea if this is easy to do but....) by adopting the same model that the Internet uses by matching ads to isp's. When I log onto LinkedIn I see ads for my local phone company even thought it is a US based service and likewise when I go to NBC.com to watch a mistakenly deleted from my PVR episode of HEROES their site tells me I can't view the show because of my geographic location.

Since most people using time shifting are on a digital based televisions delivery system couldn't appropriate ads be substituted in for your location no matter where you watched the show? I know when I call my Cable company they can tell me over the phone if my individual TV is on and if there is a problem so why can't they "geo place" (a word I made up....I think) content to just me based on my location. Sure this could lead to demo based ads but lets start with this.

Sure there would have to be new compensation models for the local stations but at least then cable companies and networks could guarantee their advertisers that their commercials will at least get seen with the shows they paid to advertise with and could probably charge more then that are currently.

Now all you need to do is get PVR / Tivo users to watch the commercials!

In Search of Steve Ditko (the other guy who created Spider-Man)

A big thank you to Heidi MacDonald from the Beat for originally posting this incredible YouTube Video on the BBC Documentary "In Search of Steve Ditko".

For those no in the "know", Steve Ditko is the co-creator of Spider-Man and until recently wasn't given public credit for his creation. This is an interesting doc for comic book fans since Steve Ditko is a bit of an enigma. He walked away from the book after 40 issues and refuses to speak about it......check that.....he refuses to talk to anyone!

Check out the video (about 9 mins long) and if you find it interesting check out the rest and enjoy!

Google Reader is the new "Video Games"

I has been using...check that...relying on Google Reader for my rss collection for a month or so. I don't know if I am late to the game or what but I am still amazed how many people I talk to have never heard of RSS feeds or use readers.

...and in someways I think that may be a good thing.

I noticed something today.......while I read all the content I collect (close to 40 sites now) and am smarter for it, I am reading the content exclusively from my reader and am not visiting the sites anymore. This "robs" me of not only the experience of "experiencing" these sites (design and function etc) but also blocks me out of enjoying the comments etc.

So how does this make readers "the new video game"?

Ok I admit this may be a bit of a stretch but after spending the better part of a decade in the comic book publishing industry I had to listen to hundreds of people say "Kids don't read comics because they are all playing video games" (something I never agreed with because I think kids are out of the habit of reading because as a culture we no longer stress the importance...and to say kids don't read is silly because they are reading plenty of online content). Maybe I should replace "Video Games" with fast food because readers give you the "Drive Thru" versions of your favorite sites.

Will readers eventually make web design obsolete?

I doubt it but I do think people will learn to make their rss feeds more "dynamic".....(this is not a smooth transition but I am tired so cut me some slack) ........I agree that content is KING but there is something to be said about packaging. Maybe this post is more of a comment on how technology is moving forward to make our lives more convenient then perhaps we need.

(after re-reading that last paragraph I realized I must sound like the bizarro world Nicholas Negroponte)

Since I am waxing poetically about all of this I have vowed to not use my reader for a whole weekend. I am going to surf the interweb the ol' fashioned way..............heck while I am at it I am even going to get off the couch to change the channels and turn off the set when I am done :)

Can someone help me understand the motivation?

Even thought the title of this here little blog is "The Smartest Man in the World" I am the first to admit that even I need help from others to understand some stuff. Sure I seem to have all the answers (and I do!....OK maybe about 93% of them) but there are a few things I just can't seem to wrap my head around so I now come to you........very humbly I might add.........for help understanding something.

I have mentioned more then a few times that I love and watch a lot of TV. My PVR (dvr/tivo) is programmed to its fullest and I will give any new show that looks interesting a chance. My wife on the other hand is the opposite of me. She will watch a few of the same shows as me but other then that she really only records/watches shows like "House Hunters" and other real estate / home reno shows (what can I say...it is her thing). I will watch them with her because House Hunters and National Open House are pretty interesting but the thing I don't get (and have been trying to understand this for so long that I am a bit embarrassed) is why people agree to be on these shows.

For those not familiar with House Hunters it is a show where someone who is in the market for a home purchase is followed with a camera to look at three places and then makes a choice/buys a house and then they come back months later to see what if anything you have done to fix the place up.

As far as I know there is no financial benefit to being on this show so why would you let people know exactly how much you are spending on a house (or a vacation home) and why would you want to be on TV just because you were approved for a mortgage?

The only thing I can think of is that this is a vanity thing but I still don't get it. I have been on TV a bunch of times and agree there is a certain thrill about seeing it but all the times I have been on TV have been in an interview/work capacity and not being put on the spot to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Now before I get too off point I will say that home reno shows that will do work in your house are cool with me because if you are on those shows you are getting a benefit (a finished basement or a new kitchen etc) out of it but shows like House Hunters and even shows like "A Baby Story" and "A Wedding Story" on TLC are just video diaries and I imagine people only do it for the stroke the their egos.

I may very well be WAAAAAAY off base here so please feel free to put me in my place if you feel moved to do so.....and if anyone knows any inside info please let me know as well because if these people are getting paid or in the case of the Wedding Story if they are getting a free wedding or services in exchange for giving up their wedding for "content" then I would get it.

This has been rolling around in my head for a while and when I wrote this (in my head) this morning it was far more intelligent sounding....Oh well....you get the point.
